I think one of the challenges bi-racial children face in the larger culture is having to define for others who they are and having to always have a sense that their difference potentially is some sort of an oddity or something that they should feel ashamed of. And the tools that I try to instill in my children is the fact that because they come from an African-American, Mexican, and German family gives them the opportunity to take with them the best of all of those communities, the traditions, the culture, the language, and enriches who they are. And as I said before, to never feel embarrassed or ashamed of who they are, but to feel that from those cultures, there derives strength and confidence.
