Trusts are not just for rich people. I know that's a common misconception. However, I would say that trusts are more important for those who don't have significant assets because you want to preserve those assets and transfer as much as you can to your children or beneficiaries. By having them subjected to the probate process, almost 10 percent of the value of your estate is diminished right off the top with court fees and lawyer's fees and executor's fees. A living trust would avoid all those fees and needless costs.
