My golden nugget parenting advice is to give your kids that one-on-one attention and let them know that you’re looking at them, that you’re listening to them, that you’re there for them. Nowadays, we’re on the computer so much, we’re on the iPhone so much, or on the iPad so much that we tend to be focused on what we’re doing and not devoting our attention to our kids when they’re talking to us. So take the time to put your device down. Look them in the eye. On the Oprah show one time, they said, “Do your eyes light up when your kids walk into your room?” And when I heard that, I thought, “How many times my kids walk into the room and I’m typing. And I just say, ‘Hi’ without looking at them.” So I know make a point to stop what I’m doing to look at them and give them that one-on-one attention, so they can tell me about their day and know that I’m focused. Also, Harvey Karp has a theory about feeding the parking meter, which is no matter how busy you are, every now and then stop, and as if you’re putting the money in the meter, stop and look at your kids, check in on them, make sure that they’re okay. And then go back to your work. So take the time to divert your attention to them and give them that special one-on-one time when you’re in the middle of everything.
