So the biggest challenge when you're implementing a democratic style of parenting is that initially your kids are going to be really upset that you're following through with what you say. So the motto is say what you mean, mean what you say, and do it. Because when you remove a child, it really doesn't matter if they melt down, throw a temper tantrum, come in begging, roll around on the floor saying they're starving. You know the truth is they're not starving. They can make it to lunch. And it's at this moment that you have an opportunity to send a message to your child that they have what it takes to get through this difficult moment. Because the truth is there will be a million difficult moments that that child will be required to get through. If a parent allows a child to learn that, they're helping them to develop resiliency and confidence.
