There are three types of kits that we want you to have: a "grab and go" kit--that's three days' worth of supplies--you keep it at home, at work, in your car; a home supplies kit--that's about two weeks' worth of supplies--that's for being able to shelter in place; and then a "by the bed" kit--we want you to have a sturdy pair of tennis shoes, a flashlight, an extra pair of glasses if you wear them--tie it into a nice bag underneath your bed so you know where to find it. Let's talk about that home supplies kit--two weeks' worth of supplies for every member of your family. You want those four essential items--water, food, first-aid kit, medications; flashlight, batteries, radio--those basic essentials--but on top of that you're adding comfort items and hygiene items. Two weeks without water, two weeks without electricity, two weeks without the internet or the television--if you've got kids or grandkids in the home, this is where you want to make sure you throw in those hand sanitizers, baby wipes, and some way to entertain them. Life will not be normal after the emergency, but the more you can do to make them feel normal, the better off you're going to be. There's also a direct correlation between good mental health and cleanliness. If you've got those sanitation items and those hygiene items, it's a lot easier for you to feel better immediately following the disaster.
