As any mother who stood in the hallway of Babys R Us feeling completely confused can attest, there are a ton of bottles on the market now. And every one is marketed differently. For colicy babies, for older babies, for younger babies, for babies who are used to the breast. And the thing is these bottles do differ and they are designed differently. And your baby might like one better than the other. But it´s not really fair to say that one is the best because just like there is no one size fits all method for infant feeding, there is no one size fits all bottle that´s going to be great for every baby. The important ways that I think that they differ: One thing is if your baby is a combo fed baby, there are doing both breast and bottle or they are weaning of the breast and switching to a bottle, there have been studies that show that babies prefer nipples for the bottles that resemble their own mother´s nipples. So while it might sound a little strange, if you check out your own equipment and compare it to what´s on the market, that may help you have a better transition to the bottle. The other thing I think that´s important about the differences between bottles is how hard they are to clean. It´s something that you don´t think about when you are following for the marketing message of this is better for reducing colic and gas. First of all, nothing reduces colic or gas. If your baby is gassy or colicy, they are going to be gassy and colicy. But there are some bottles that tend to be a little bit better for reflux babies because they allow less air in so those are good for that reason. But there are also really hard to clean. So I would suggest if your baby can make do with a simpler bottle design, it might be in your best interest because you are not going to have to spend hours every night cleaning. The other thing you might want to do is before you invest in a ton of the same kinds of bottles, buy one of each kind or not even each kind, but one of a variety of kinds, and let your baby make the ultimate choice because babies will prefer certain bottles to others and it´s kind of annoying when you realize that your baby isn´t handling the kind of bottle that you just invested 50 dollars in that well. So you might want to try a couple at first before you commit.
