Many parents are concerned about babies who appear to have a tremendous amount of gas or seem to be tremendously fussy after feeds.
Typically, we look at the mother's diet first. There are so many old wive's tales and cultural traditions about what mother's eat. I often find that mothers can go down to bread and water and their babies are still really gassy. So if one particular food can be isolated, then that mom can certainly take that out of her diet and see if that works. My hunch is that it probably won't.
Certainly, the babies may just have a stomach full of air and need a good burp. That's a possibility. Women who have a really forceful letdown, frequently will have a baby that is really gassy. Some babies are actually allergic to cow's milk protein and some moms have to take cow's milk out of their diet. Sometimes soy protein can cause some issues.
Some babies are actually really uncomfortable because they have reflux. You can argue that all babies have reflux, but some babies have GERD. They have burning at the bottom of the esophagus and may need some treatment for that.
