5 Essential Home Safety Rules

family home security

A lot goes into making a house a home. You want to make it comfortable and to your personal taste of course but above all, safe and secure especially for your loved ones.

This is a big concern for many homeowners and plenty of consideration goes into ensuring one's home is safe and secure. The good news is, there are more steps than ever you can take to secure your home and here are five easy rules to help protect your home and everyone in it.

1. Lock your doors and windows

Locking your doors and windows is the easiest defence against home intruders. This may sound simple enough but how many of us can say we do this consistently?

A good practice when leaving your home is to always double check doors and windows are fully secured.

2. Invest in a home security system

Having a home security system is one of the most effective ways to prevent intruders from entering your home. There are plenty of good security systems out there to choose from for every budget and every level of protection.

The minimum suggestion would be a home security camera system or video doorbell at the front or sides of your home which has a mobile app allowing you to see real time footage, two-way talk and motion detection. Together with a visible security alarm system and window sensors for added security and safety against intruders.

Security systems also provide you with the peace of mind that your home is safeguarded.

3. Fire safety equipment

It is always highly advisable to have a smoke alarm fitted on every floor of your home. Ensure this alarm is fully functional and regularly checked to help prevent fires.

Always remember you cannot see, smell or taste carbon monoxide so ensure you regularly check and service your CO2 appliances. Have a carbon monoxide detector fitted in your home to also help and give you an early warning sign of the danger from such harmful fumes.

4. Locking away valuables

Never leave valuables out in the open for potential burglars to see. keep valuables out of sight and locked away. Invest in a safe to store your most important possessions.

This includes car keys, as there are now sophisticated ways thieves can obtain them without you knowing. This is done by using a range extender to clone your keys from a close distance and then gain access into your car.

A way to prevent this is to place your keys in an RFID signal blocker wallet which essentially blocks any radio waves sent to clone/copy your keys.

5. Keep a first aid kit handy

Have a well stocked first aid kit somewhere easily accessible in your home. Ensure you update your kit periodically as some items within the kit do expire.

The bottom line

Implementing these tips will help discourage and prevent intruders, keep your family and belongings safe. Each small improvement will give you that added peace of mind even when you are away from home.
