When our child is doing something we don't want, most of us search for a consequence, some sort of penalty to force the child to do things the way we want. Actually, if we back up and we start by staying connected, emotion coaching so a child can regulate their emotions in there for their behavior. Our child would want to behave because they are connected and they will have the emotional tools to behave and you won't need consequences because you will see very little misbehavior. And when you do see misbehavior, you can help your child with whatever emotions drove it and then sit down and help your child understand how to repair it. "I think your brother is pretty upset, when you knocked down his tower. Wonder what we could do to help him feel better"? All of us inadvertently damage relationships from time to time, very important for the children to know how to do that repair work. It work so much better than a consequence, to get the child to do what you want, they just resent that. But this is repair work you are empowering your child, to make something better to know we all make mistakes, for we can always make it better.
