If you have an elementary school school who is struggling with reading like mine was, the best thing is to just have them sit on your lap and pick a book that is the right level for them and have them start with the sounds. Don´t ask them to sound it out all the time. That is something we grew up hearing. Sound it out. Sound it out. But it doesn´t make sense to them because they are seeing letters almost like they are pictures. They can look at the word the in one sentence and then not recognize it the next sentence later. So it is very important that you take it one step at a time with them. You help them with the sounds. Ask them to look for picture clues in the picture that is there. If they cannot figure out what the word is, if they cannot figure out what the sound is, just ask them do you see anything in the picture that helps you. Try yourself to stay calm because it is very easy for us as parents to get frustrated when we see that they are frustrated. So just help them with the sound. Start to make the sound for them. If they see the word cat, say c and then let them fill out the rest. And then, it makes them feel so confident. Or vice versa, you can have them start the word and then you finish it for them and you do it together. And before you know it, they are going to be reading at grade level within months.
