Behavior Around Older Siblings

Posted August 31, 2015 - 11:44am

My 3 year old is really well behaved when we go to the stores alone, but when an older sibling is with us, she is not so good. I think she's putting on a show for them and trying to keep up.

Anyone else have this happen?

Mommy Ramblings

My 2 youngest are usually terrible when I bring them together to the store. They are much more well behaved separately. I think they just feed off each other and not in a good way.

Same here. Two are trouble, but it doesn't stop me from doing things as a family. You're just going to be yelling a bit more.

We still do things togetheer too, but I can honestly say that I enjoy shopping with just her.

Yes, I find that in my classroom. When an older sib is around, the younger child's behavior changes. They seem to want to be like the older one and impress them. Children are keen observers - the younger one may get attention from the older sibling as well as mom for this behavior!

Yes! It's so weird how they are often worse together. And they are really pretty well behaved but there is just something about the combination... The younger one is always trying to get the older one's attention, which annoys the older one and then it becomes a fight. She really adores her big sis.

Yes FMM. Obviously, you want to take the girl shopping over the boy for clothes anyway! :)

So true.  Although my 17 year old was really good about going clothes shopping with me.  He's actually more patient then my husband and willing to hold things for me.

For me, three's a crowd.  I can manage any combination of 2 of my kids at the store but throw all three of them together and it's a disaster waiting to happen.  Sometimes it's partners in crime, sometimes they all just fight. One on one time almost always equals good behavior though — too bad it's so rare!

That is totally my experience too! I totally avoid shopping with all three of them, unless I totally have to. In those cases I try to be really organized and focused. Key word = "try".

Even my 4 year old used to behave like this, but then you have to explain them its  wrong to behave in such a way with elders, but I guess they just want to show that they are not weak or scared of them, its a natural thing!Just explaining once that doing this is wrong will be enough.
