Books on sex for kids

Posted March 5, 2013 - 8:24am
I gave 2 kids, ages 10 & 5. I'm looking for recommendations on books that address sex and human sexuality. I'm interested in books for me, as a parent wanting to have healthy discussions on this topic. I'm also keen on books that are for kids to read and keep so that they can research the information they need as it comes up.

Hello! I have a couple of suggestions for you: in the parenting classes I teach, I highlight a series from Concordia publishing called The New Learning About Sex ; a series for the Christian Family. There are 7 books for kids that go from toddler/preschool all the way to teen, and also a couple books for the parent. Another, more secular book I like is Ten Talks parents Must Have With Their Children About Sex and Character by Pepper Schwartz and Dominic Cappello. I hope this helps!

I know the American Girl series has a great one for girls...

First, kudos to you for taking the initiative to start digging into this subject now--as a Health Educator at Planned Parenthood we always advise parents to start these conversations early, so that you can develop an ongoing dialogue with your children about sex and sexuality. Listed below are a few of my favorite books--a few for parents, and a few for kids themselves: "All About Sex," by Ronald Filberti Moglia, EdD and Jon Knowles "Beyond the Big Talk," by Debra W. Haffner, MHP "From Diapers to Dating," by Debra W. Haffner "It's So Amazing," by Robie Harris "What's Happening to My Body? Book for Boys/Girls," by Lynda Madaras Hope that these help! Minerva

I was going to recommend All About Sex as well.  I bought that when I was dealing with this with my twins.
