Coffee Break 9/3/15: off topic free for all

Posted September 3, 2015 - 8:38am

Morning! I thought it might be fun to have an off topic thread where we just chit chat for a bit. We'll see how it works!

Today I'm trying to get caught up on things I didn't get done this summer. Also? I just had the best breakfast: I fried an egg, put a little shredded cheese on it, then added a slice of deli turkey. I rolled it all up in a tortilla. YUM!

How are you today?

Yum! Sounds like a good breakfast.  I'm still in my pajamas (perks of working from home!) but I'm about to get myself and the kids ready for school orientation.  School starts next Wednesday.  This year they are trying something new.  For the first three days they won't have a teacher.  They will be in mixed small groups with kids of different ages.  This is supposed to be a team building experience but I know from talking to other parents there is a lot of hesitation about it.  My kids are pretty laid back and go with the flow so I know they won't have any problems but I'm worried for other kids that might have a hard time with first day of school jitters to begin with.  There are so many unknowns! That's what I'm up to today!

CandyOvercaffed

That is different! How old are the kids? I didn't know there were schools that still started in September! When does their school year end? We go from mid-August until the first week of June.

Think this is a great idea.  I think as moms we sometimes feel alone out there and it's great to build a community. Sorry I couldn't join in today.

CandyOvercaffed

That's OK! I knew it would be sporadic. We'll try again tomorrow. ;)

@CandyOvercaffed The grades participating are 1st through 6th.  Kindergarten won't start until the following week.  School here usually starts after Labor Day and it's pretty late this year.  We will go until June 17th I think unless there are snow days to make up.

Frugal Minded M...

Are you in Michigan by any chance Hallz105.  We moved from there the year they made it mandatory to start after labor day.

CandyOvercaffed

Wow! That's such a cool concept for those ages. I hope you update us as to how it all works out!

What a great thread! And the perfect day to start it...my day was awful at work. Now I'm home, just picked my youngest up from his robotics team, my daughter brought her friend home, I have a summer cold and really just want to curl up in bed and call it a day. See, already I'm feeling better, thanks to this thread. Your breakfast sounds amazing! Thank you for this great idea!

Hallz105

Hope you have a better day tomorrow!  What's robotics team?  Do they build robots?  Feel better soon!

jonbonjovious

Tomorrow's Friday so already it's looking better :)Robotics is a team that builds, programs and designs a robot for a Robotics Competition in late November. It's his first year--only 12 students were chosen. He loves it--it feeds is uber nerd side tremendously!

CandyOvercaffed

Oh man! Summer colds are the worst... I was feeling terrible yesterday and DID curl up on the couch for a bit. Paying for that today, though. The blessing/curse of working from home.

Robotics sounds totally awesome! Do they enter any competitions? He sounds like a possible future engineer.

Hallz105

@Frugal Minded Mom No, we are north of Seattle, WA.

Now that the day is winding down I should add, I actually did get a few things done today, including getting dinner in the crock pot! BUT. (Because there's always a but) Now my husband is going to be home 20 minutes later so I am very sure the pork chops are going to be dried out. On the plus side, I'm a terrible cook so no one expects much from me. ;0)

Hallz105

Ha! This made me laugh  — I'm not the best cook either.  There's less pressure when the expectations are low ;)

beachcitymom

What a great idea for a post! Sorry I missed earier today. :)

Mommy Ramblings

We have a post like this in one of our groups in another forum. It is nice for just having a thread to connect in about the every day stuff. It is so funny all the ones like this I have seen mention coffee. LOL.

@CandyOvercaffed After visiting the school today myself and all of the other moms I talked to are much more at ease about the First 3 Days program.  It's actually pretty neat and really should help bond the school as a whole.  My 1st grader is paired with a 5th grade buddy and her teacher for the first 3 days is a 5th grade teacher.  My 3rd grader will also be assigned a buddy and he's excited that he'll have his teacher from last year plus two of his friends in his class — one a grade younger and one a grade older.  Now that I know how it works I think it's a pretty neat idea.

CandyOvercaffed

Wow. I've never heard of that. Very cool. Great learning experience for all!

My kids started school this week - a sophomore and a senior and my daughter came home with her cap and gown already! I wasn't ready for that. I need time to slow down a bit! As for me, I went back to work prepping my classroom for the kids arrival next week! Whew, this week is a busy, productive and exhausting one. Breathe!!

CandyOvercaffed

Gasp! I wouldn't be ready for that either. I mean, at least let the year start before you have to see that. Good luck!

Frugal Minded M...

I have a senior too and although he didn't come home with the cap and gown, it really threw me for a loop going to pick out his Senior Pictures last week.
