How concerned are you with chemicals?

Posted August 26, 2015 - 10:16am

Do you continue to use Clorox, Tide, Cascade, Johnson and Johnson's? Are you concerned about the cancer causing, hormone disrupting, central nervous system damaging chemicals in those products? Did you detox your home or do you just think it is hype?

For me, it depends. I try and buy foods that don't have soy or other additives for my family. I make my own laundry detergent, but I also use Tide and other laundry soaps. I try and seek the most natural, but sometimes it's not practical for time, convenience or cost.

I think the natural organic cleaners that do just as good a job as the old standbys that were so strong-smelling they'd make you sick are the way to go. I'm allergic to bleach anyway as well as a lot of processed foods so I do try to keep it natural. Baking soda makes such a great Ajax substitute & it's cheap! Btw, baking soda also makes a great exterminator. It's the only thing that would get rid of a terrible flea infestation I had a few yrs back.

I usually by soaps and detergents with fewer harmful chemicals and use vinegar as my main cleaner. My bigger concern with the chemicals is that bleach based products irritate allergies for my daughter and husband. I use the products on occasion, especially on toilets or mildew prone areas, as I haven't found an alternative that works better. I rarely by mainstream beauty products for any of us, though. I avoid parabens, pthalates, & SLS when I can. There are so many options now so it's pretty easy.

I also use vinegar, baking soda, and other natural items for cleaning when possible. I love the 7th Generation line of household detergents and cleaners. I really tend to be more focused on natural healthy foods than I am with the cleaning products!

Vinegar and Water with the occasional essential oil or baking soda thrown in have become my favorite cleaners.  We still do have Clorox in the house because my husband doesn't think the shower can be clean without it.  I let him do that job though because my lungs can't handle it.We still use Cascade though.  I almost switched to making my own tablets with Borox, but then I read some scary facts on Borox and that it can make boys grow feminine features.
