Some of the ways to tell if a teacher can engage a class is obviously if you get to be in that classroom and if you're a volunteer in that classroom and you're observing and you see that the students in that class seem to know what they're supposed to be doing. They're engaged. Their behavior is purposeful. If you don't have the luxury of being in that classroom, then at home you hear a certain kind of excitement about what happened that day without having to ask and probe. You get the, oh, we learned about whales today. And did you know this? So you look for purposeful behavior as well as some level of excitement.
