It's really hard to decide what's safe for your child when it comes to TV and screen time. The first thing is to think about their age. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggest that children under 2 not watch television and I know some of you are really cringing about that but it's not so good for them to just be sitting in front of a screen. Now, when it comes to safety for older children, it's a real dilemma. A lot depends on your values so sit with your child and watch some of their favorite shows and think if a stranger came into my house and stood in my living room and talked about these things and said this, would I approve or would I kick them right out? So, you need to let your children watch things that feel right to you. You don't want them to be watching for hours because it eliminates time to do other things like play. There is a wonderful website called www.commonsensemedia.org and they give you guidelines as to what age is appropriate like should a 4-year-old watch Star Wars. Well, some do but Commonsense Media says you should be 10. Now, you have to use your common sense based on you child's age and their temperament and your values but the key is to pay attention.
