In 25 years preschool has changed a lot. Parents have changed a lot. Kids are coming to preschool very mature in their intellectual understanding of the world. And very mature in this social and emotional development. Parents have become more anxious, which then in return makes their kids more anxious. Kids have come to school more afraid to discover, to play, to be who they are. As parents, we’ve become so protective of our kids that we’re not allowing them to be who they are. We’re not allowing them to dream, to be free, to discover, to imagine. A lot of those things have been taken away from kids, so I see them come in very scared of their own shadow, not willing to try, because they’re so afraid of failing. Yet preschool is a time when they do all of these things and it is very important for parents also to understand that the more they protect, the less their child is going to feel comfortable in being in a new situation and discovering new things. So those are the changes that I feel that are happening in preschools.
