Chiropractic is a great tool for labor and delivery preparation. The muscles and bones of the female pelvis are designed to accommodate and facilitate the movement of the baby down into the birth canal during labor, and if those joints become restricted and stop moving and the muscles around the pelvis become like a belt that squeezes the pelvis closed, then instead of helping the baby come through, the pelvis starts to restrict the baby’s movement. With chiropractic adjustment, starting at about 32, 33 weeks, we loosen up the joints of the pelvis and loosen the muscles and tendons around the pelvis to make sure that it can accommodate and facilitate the movements of the baby through a smooth labor and delivery. In our experience, women who have a history of running, dance, gymnastics, Pilates, things that make the muscles around the pelvis particularly strong and tight, they benefit more from chiropractic and massage work in the later stages of pregnancy to really spend time loosening up those extra stiff and strong muscles around the back of the pelvis, the piriformus muscles, and the front of the pelvis, the hip flexor muscles.
