When my son was born, he was beautifully healthy, he had the most amazing apgar scores, he looked wonderful, we had a great 20 minutes of skin-on-skin time, really bonding. And when he started to root for my nipple, all of a sudden he became kind of complacent. The nurses looked at him and he had kind of turned purple and became dusky, they like to call it, and he just didn't have the energy that we all expected. Immediately they took him away and tried to find out what the issue was, and it turned out that he wasn't breathing well and he had a respiratory infection. It could have been caused by him swallowing meconium during delivery, it could have been caused by another infection from me or from anything else. But it was diagnosed that he had that respiratory infection, so he was sent to the NICU immediately and ended up with an 8-day course of antibiotics. We caught it in time and he's perfectly healthy.
