A lot of my clients ask me about the mercury in fish. They all want to know should I eat fish? Is it safe? Is the mercury dangerous to my unborn baby? And the truth is, yes, it is dangerous. There is a lot of mercury in fish. But it doesn't mean that we can't eat fish. And there are also a lot of great nutrients in a fish that a pregnant lady needs to eat, so you can't avoid fish altogether. Here are the fish you should really stay away from - the very large ones. The shark, the king mackerel, the swordfish, the large tunas - the kind of fishes that eat other fish, because chances are they store a lot more of the mercury. You know, the FDA classify those kinds of fish as very high risk because they have a greater potential of carrying a lot more mercury. Now you have other types of fish, the small ones, stuff that are on the smaller scale, like freshwater trout, or scallops or salmon. Those are classified as safe to eat, but you still want to keep it to about 12 ounces per week. That's the guideline that's been set for pregnant women is 12 ounces of these fish per week, because you're still going to get the good Omega fats that you need, but you won't have the harmful levels of mercury that are found in the larger ones. You also want to stay away from raw fish. So ladies, sushi is not safe to eat during pregnancy. I know you love it and I hate to see you give it up, but you have to give up your sushi during pregnancy, because you don't want to eat raw fish or meat because the possibility that it might be contaminated with salmonella or listeria. So you have to avoid eating sushi during pregnancy.
