Is there a goal weight that you should strive for during pregnancy? Not something you should really need to think about. And yes, if you start out the pregnancy being at a normal weight, there's a typical amount of weight that your physician would like to see you gain, and that's anywhere from 25-35 pounds. Again, it depends on the individual. Some people gain far less. My wife gained far less when she was pregnant with our first. So that's individual specific. If you start off your pregnancy being underweight, yes, your physician is going to want to see you gain more weight, maybe 25-40 pounds during that pregnancy, because again that is important for your pregnancy and how your baby is developing. If you start off your pregnancy being overweight or obese, your physician is going to want to see you gain less weight. And that may be anywhere from 15-25 pounds. So all of that is very individual specific. And is it something that you really should worry about? Should you worry about like they used to do in the old days - just eat. Just eat whatever you want. No. It's not a matter of just eating anything. It's a matter of eating highly nutritious foods. Because again, the same way you eat to stay healthy when you're not pregnant is the same way you want to eat when you're pregnant because now what you eat is what your baby is also eating. So you want to focus on eating as healthy as possible.
