I have a pre-schooler now, and for me, discipline is about two things. One is, it's empowering them to make their own choices and communicating that those choices will have consequences. So, number one for me is don't say it-for me-don't say it unless I mean it. I can't ever do an empty threat. So, if I say, "if you do that again we leave this restaurant", we have to actually leave the restaurant because, If I go back on my word, it's over. So, one of my biggest tips for discipline is about disciplining myself-that if I say it, I have to do it. I would say, one of my other tips for discipline is compassion and when I've explained the choices-and there's always two choices-and then she makes the choice to do the thing that has the consequence attached, to compassionately say, "I am so sorry you made that choice, but that means, like, we're leaving now". And, no matter if she cries or has a fit or whatever, when she has that fit, to love her through that fit and not get angry on top of it; to stay calm and love her through her choice has been a really powerful tool for me. Because she really knows I love her and I'm choosing this consequence, to follow through with this consequence out of love. I would say, another discipline tip that I love is the phrase, "when you...x....I feel....y.....because....z...I like it better when you...abc". And that's a phrase that I learned really early and it took a little time for her to really hear it. But now, it works like a charm. So, if you really practice it on a regular basis, by the time I say, "Livia, when you-" "Sorry mom!" And she'll stop whatever she's doing and it's a really magical expression. For example, if my daughter's not listening to me, I'll say, "Liv, when you don't listen to me, I feel ignored, because I'm trying to tell you something that's really important for you to listen to. I like it better when you listen". "Sorry mom", and she like, focuses in and listens, and it's kind of magic. Shh, don't tell.
