So, how do I get a background check if I'm hiring a nanny or a family friend or neighbor and what is it entail. If you choose a family child care home or license program, that background check is done. If you're choosing a nanny, if you're choosing from a nanny agency, most nanny agencies has a background check done. You want to ask them, have they done it and which one have they done. In the City of California, we have TrustLine which is you're hiring a family friend or neighbor, you want to make sure. You may like that neighbor a lot but you may want to still check into it. So, you want to do the TrustLine background check. It's a life scan. It's a process like fingerprint, electronic. You would do that and checks two things, the Child Abuse Index and it checks the Department of Justice. You get a letter back saying whether or not they're cleared. So, you do want to do a background check again. As a parent, you want to do your due diligence and make sure where you're placing your child and who you're placing your child with that your child is safe. So, where do you go to get the life scan, where do you go to get the background check for your provider or your nanny or your family friend or neighbor? You would want to contact Child Care Aware. Child Care Aware is a national resource and referral agency. There's resource and referral agencies in every state. Child Care Aware will connect you with your resource and referral in your state and they will connect you with your local background check agency. Remember, you are your child's source advocate and it's your role to make sure who you're placing them with and you need to know everything about them so that your child is safe.
