Any parent who wants to raise a bilingual child, first, needs to be really convinced that this is what they want to do. It isn't going to be an easy journey. Kids do rebel. This is the best gift you can give them, and no one can take it away from them. So, first, be convinced. If you speak the second language -- Let's say Spanish. If you speak Spanish, start speaking Spanish to your child from the day they are born. They really need to hear the sounds of that language. The more they hear it, the more they are going to retain it. That's how babies learn language, by hearing the sounds. They eliminate the sounds that they don't need. So, talk, talk, talk, talk to them as much as possible. That also includes making it fun. How do kids learn? Through play. It needs to be fun, immersive, find activities that they enjoy doing, playgroups. If you have a grandmother or other relatives that have access to that language, give it to them because it is coming from a place of love. Just that, speak to them a lot, make it immersive, and if you have the option of a immersion program at school; go for it.
