Can children recover from autism? It depends on what you call recovery. Can they participate in life? Can they sleep the whole night? Or can they have conversations with mom? Can they be mainstream in school? So the answer is yes to all of those. Some children can come off the spectrum, may be a little quirky like their dad, but they're in mainstream; they can do their math, they can do their writing, struggle a little bit with word comprehension, some of those motors that work in the brain got a little bit burnt, if you will, between the autism stage and all. But they can recover. Can they be totally normal? Probably not. But to somebody who has an untrained eye, they're doing just fine, and they can get married, get a college degree, and all that. But what about other kids? Can they recover? Well, again, I have some parents say, "If you could just get me kid to sleep the whole night, I'll never ask you for another thing." Well, once we do that, then they want more. But we can improve the child's life and that's what it's all about, making them pain-free and be able to participate in our world. And there's various extents; some totally can get it all, some kids get there 3/4 of the way. But really as parents, we want the most that our children can be.
