An auditory processing disorder is a sensory processing disorder in the auditory system, which basically, what is the ear hearing that the brain is not doing. The problem is not with the ear, it is with the brain. People with auditory processing disorders have a difficulty really perceiving almost any auditory information they are given. It can be for a variety of reasons. There's a huge umbrella of auditory processing. There are several different levels of processing information of the information that's coming in and the break down can be at any level. For instance, if you are talking to your child and telling your child to do something, "Take of your shoes, put them at the front door, and go get your backpack." And your child is looking at you with these big eyes and not doing anything. This may be an auditory processing delay, where your child, somehow, has not put that whole message together. They are either missing words, they are not remembering, auditory memory is part of an auditory processing delay. They are not remembering what they just heard or they are dropping words out of what you just said because they can't discriminate over the sounds that you just used. It's a perfect example of a child with an auditory processing disorder.

Erin also specializes in the treatment of auditory processing disorders and other learning disabilities as they relate to speech and language development. She is a national speaker, author, trainer, and mother. Her years of dedication to the field have helped both children and adults.
