For any child with special needs, it is really important to have your pediatrician and your speech language pathologist and anyone on the Individualized Educational Plan or IEP team to be on the same page with adding sign language to your routine. For some kids, it is a really good idea. For some, it is not. So it is important that everyone is on board and that you look at the child´s functional communication needs and see if that is a good idea to add into your routine. So again, if you have any questions about your child´s speech language development or you are concerned that your child might not benefit or might benefit from using sign, you should talk to your speech pathologist, your IEP team or your pediatrician.
