Having a child with autism has created a lot of stress in my marriage. It’s something that I don’t feel like it’s talked about very much. But it is really difficult. You have two different parents who come at this very large problem in two different ways and inherently you want to have all these structures put in place, but when two different people are doing something, you lose your sense of structure and it creates friction between two people.
And just the consumption – it’s very consuming to have a child with autism, so you don’t even think to give your partner time and energy – you don’t even have it available.
So it’s really difficult and very stressful and we looked to a counselor to help us navigate these waters. And she came up with these simple things we could do which has been essential – just appreciating each other, saying one thing we appreciated about each other every day. And it makes an enormous difference.
