Coaching your own kids can be very tough. Quite often it’s hard to treat your kid the same way you’re treating all the other kids on the team. And you have to treat them equally and fairly – you can’t show bias for your son or daughter and you can’t not show them respect as a player and treat them the same as the other players. But be careful for the goals and objectives you set for your kid as a coach. When my oldest son was 8 or 9 I was coaching a soccer team and he was one of my quickest and toughest players. And so I had him mark a player on the other team, “You follow him everywhere he goes and you deny him the ball.” Well, he didn’t do that good of a job in the first half and this kid was sensational, scored a couple goals. At half time, he was walking towards me – I met him halfway on the field and I was in his grill. “What, did you get up on the wrong side of the bed?” “Don’t you care about this game?” “Aren’t you going to fight it?” “I asked you to do something. Why aren’t you doing it? Get in there and do something.” And then he just stormed away from me. Second half stops, they did a pass back, he stole the ball, cuts to the outside, goes in, kicks the ball in the corner and scores a goal. He does not break stride and keeps running. And he comes right by coach Tim standing midfield and yells at me, “Are you happy now?” And continued on. About 10 seconds later, my wife goes behind me with our 2-year-old in the stroller and says, ”The Great Santini.” I never did that again as a coach – I learned my lesson.
