The more parents that opt their children out of the state test, I think the sooner that things will change. The power is in the parents' hands. If enough parents opt out, they will have no choice but to stop teaching for the test. Also, I would suggest advocating for no and less homework. Let your teachers know and get your parents on board. There's tons of research that homework does not increase test scores or learning after Eighth Grade. It does help a little bit in the High School years, but until then, they should have their afternoons and their evenings for free time for their families and to pursue their own interests. You don't need school coming home with you. Share your new ideas and philosophies with your teachers, the school, and with other parents. Love your kid. Love your kid for who they are and not for getting straight A's. Don't punish them for not getting straight A's. Encourage them to find what makes them tick and what they want to do. Let them guide and don't judge their choices, even if it's not what you would choose for them.
