Sadness is a normal, healthy and important emotion. As a Child Psychiatrist, I worry if patients don't get sad. Everybody should get sad when something difficult or upsetting happens in your life.
Depression is an illness; it's a disease, it's a disorder. The difference is that it's much more intense, lasting for a longer period of time and its interfering with the child's life with their ability to function. Sadness is a normal, healthy emotion, an important part of growing up. Depression is a real illness which is interfering with your ability to function.
The good news is we can help kids who suffer from depression. The real tragedy is that there are still many kids that don't get the help that they need and deserve.

David Fassler, MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist practicing in Burlington, Vermont. A graduate of Yale University School of Medicine, he completed his training in adult psychiatry at the University of Vermont, and in child psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
