Transcription:
We at Safe Alternatives don't believe that this is a disease, the self-injury is a disease. Therefore, we don't believe that people need to live with this as a life long struggle. We have seen so many people come through our program who, once they feel comfortable in their own skin, once they have choices in life, once they learn how to deal with their emotional life; they no longer have the need to self-injure. It can become so foreign to them that when they see other people doing it, they can't even relate anymore. I'm very optimistic and a big believer that people can get through this and recover. That said, there are people who have mental illnesses such as Bipolar, and severe depressions or borderline personality disorder; which may struggle with an emotional life. They may have impulses to injure. I believe that, even they, can learn not to self-injure and be okay with that.
