Without treament, an average episode of depression in a child lasts about nine months. And that´s a very long time, particularly for a young child. If you think about it, it´s really a whole school year or half of two school years. And what we find is it´s hard for them to catch up. They have missed out on things academically because it is hard to focus on your schoolwork. if you are depressed. They have missed out on things socially with their friends. They are often a little bit behind so it reall does have lasting consequences. Often, the first episode of depression isn´t even diagnosed. We often don´t find about it until subsequent episodes there was an episode of depression earlier on. But without treatment, it does go on for a significant period of time and there´s an increased risk of lasting consequences.

David Fassler, MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist practicing in Burlington, Vermont. A graduate of Yale University School of Medicine, he completed his training in adult psychiatry at the University of Vermont, and in child psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He currently serves as clinical director of Otter Creek Associates, a multidisciplinary practice providing comprehensive mental health and substance abuse treatment services. Dr. Fassler is also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont, and the Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at the Vermont Center for Children, Youth and Families.
