Most of us would say, "Not my kid, he doesn't shoplift," but I wouldn't be so sure. CNN polls that one out of four of our kids do. The most interesting thing is that 38 percent of our Fifth Grade population says that they have been pushed to do so was a dare by a peer. Therefore, time to sit down with your child and tell them that honesty is the best policy in your house. If your child takes something -- and I don't care if it's a wad of gum or a pricey iPod -- your consequence is to take it back. You may have to accompany your child, but it's always the best consequence. You may have to talk to shopkeeper before hand to make sure that your child will not be arrested. Bottom line is, your child deserves and needs to know the consequence because your child's character is at stake. You do not want this to become a habit. It needs to stop, ASAP, now. Be a parent and make sure your child does not get away with this behavior.
