Warning signs of a teen in crisis? First of all, teens get really good at hiding these signs. I can't tell you, in 14 years of doing this, how many highly educated, highly invested parents, came into my office when things really fell apart and said, "We had no idea. We had no reason to suspect." I think parents need to look for red flags. These red flags are as follows: Changes in sleep. They will start to sleep more or less than they usually do. They will start to become additionally irritable. They will see changes in food. They will eat more or less than they normally do. They'll see a sudden dropping in grades. There will be an increase in distractiblity and the ability to concentrate. they will become withdrawn and isolated. They won't find enjoyable normally pleasurable activities. I think if parents are seeing any of these signs, even one, it warrants you to have a conversation with your kid. If you really can't get them to own it or rectify that this is a problem, take them to get professional help, such as a psychologist. At least they can evaluate them for you.
