As a parent, as a man, I would never pass up a carpool opportunity with my kids, particularly in their teenage years. Sit behind the wheel, shut up and listen. You will learn more about what is going on in your young son or daughter's life than at any other time. They are all quiet in the beginning, but eventually, they forget that you are there. They start talking about school, about friends, about things that interest them, about things they are interested in; things they like, things they don't like. You learn so much. Resist the temptation to interrupt, to say something, to offer your view of things. It's unimportant because this is a learning lesson. Seize every opportunity to be the dad that's driving your daughter's friends and her to a game, a bunch of your son's friends and your son to a game. You'll be surprised at how much you will learn.
