Alcohol is the drug. It is the most dangerous drug for a teenager today. it kills more of our kids than all the other drugs combined. But adults don't like seeing alcohol as a drug, because that is typically our drug of choice. So we have this ambivalent response when our kid drinks. If he came home with a handful of pills, we'd go insane. But he comes home drinking at age 14, dads usually will say, "boys will be boys. Had a couple of beers. what's the big deal?" We are the pushers. Kids are drinking tremendous amounts, and people have missed that in the research. The concentration of drinking has gone up exponentially. The age of onset has gone down. Every time we run the numbers, kids are drinking more and at younger ages. Why is that? Because it's okay for us as adults, we enable it with kids. We ask kids who have terrible alcohol problems where they're getting the alcohol from. A third of them reported getting it voluntarily from their parents. A fourth of them drink with their parents, age 14-16, or with the parents of a close friend. So we hand kids this message that this is sort of okay. The terrible bottom line to this is that teen brains cannot be engaged in neuro addictive substances like alcohol. If they start drinking at age 14, they have 5 times the rate of full-blown alcoholism as young adults than people who wait until their age 20 as females or age 22 as males.
