Stephen Wallace: I joined the National Board of Directors of Students Against Driving Drunk or S. A. D. D. in 1993. In 1995, I was elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The first I did was to commence a study of young people all across this country to see what they thought S. A. D. D. should be doing going forwards. Since the issue of impaired driving had already reduced the number of young people killed in automobile related crashes by over 60%. And what we heard from kids, S. A. D. D. kids and non- S. A. D. D. kids, all across the country was we will all apply to all concerns that we had, the same period of peer model of education, prevention and activism that we applied so successfully to the issue of impaired driving. And they asked us to focus on underage drinking, other drug use, bullying, violence and suicide. So S. A. D. D. in 1997 expanded its mission and changed its name to Students Against Destructive Decisions. After 15 and ½ years as CEO, I stepped aside in July of 2011. And with an interest in continuing the research program that I began at S. A. D. D., founded the Center for Adolescent Research and Education or C. A. R. E. at Sasquehanna University at Selinsgrove Pennsylvania. Through C. A. R. E. and continuing my national research program, looking to find new ways to understand why young people make the choices that they’re making. And who and what influences those choices. Most importantly the role that parents can play in keeping children safe and alive.
