When trying to determine the level of care for your child, you need to look at the other behaviors associated with drug and alcohol use. Is your child failing school? Is your child getting in trouble with the police? Are they running away? Do they have defiant behavior? If you notice that your child is behaving differently, acting out and getting in trouble, they are a candidate for residential treatment. They are going to need structure to change their behaviors. Once it gets to the level where the police are involved or not coming home at night or acting out sexually, then they need more structure than you can provide in an outpatient setting.
