Several years ago I worked with a family and their daughter at the age of 13 met a man online who she thought in the beginning was 13 years old as well. After 3 years of talking online and even video chatting, she decided to go and meet him for the first time. She didn't tell anybody she was going. So when she didn't come home from school that day, mom had access to her email and was able to quickly find that she had agreed to go and meet this person. This was not a 16-year old boy, but a 45-year old registered sex offender, and his plan was to take her across state lines. If mom had not had access to her email, I don't know if we would have been able to find her as quickly as we did. It's very important that you have access to your kids' online world. You should have all of their accounts, user names, and passwords, written down on a piece of paper. If your child is older and doesn't want you to spy on them, seal it in an envelope, but know that in case of an emergency, you always have access to that information.
