The most important thing when you are with your kids and your family is to stay focused on what they are doing.
You may be at the soccer game and miss the one goal that he is going to score for the entire year because you are on your phone texting. I don't allow any phone calls while we are at home, at dinnertime. All phones get turned off. Computers get turned off. My kids do not have cell phones. I allow some games and some computer time, but it is structured. I know how long. I think it is important that there is a time limit. "Okay. You have an hour to play games." I know what games they are playing and it starts at 1:00 and ends at 2:00.
The phone, texting, and calling, I see 7 and 8 year olds doing it. I think it's a really, really bad idea and it cannot be good for you. You've got to go with your gut feeling. This is a gut feeling thing. Does it matter if your kid knows how to use an iPad at 8 or 12 or at 16? And it changes every year. You've got to update those things.
I just think we forget how to interact as human beings and everybody absorbed in their devices. You, as parents, lose a lot of valuable time with your kids.
