It's interesting. When I first got into the field of adoption, I had a mental image of a birth mother being an 18 year old girl, who is a high school cheerleader, got pregnant on prom night, and placed a child up for adoption. In reality, it's something totally different. Most of the mothers I see are in their early 20's, have one or two children already. They are poor, distressed financially. Their birth father is not around them. The family is not around to help. This next child is really going to put them over the age. It's not what you would have thought, it may have been the 18 year old who kept her first child or first two children, but is now she is little more realistic, a little more sensible of what it takes to raise a child, and recognizes that she just doesn't have the means to do that.
