Transcription:
We decided to disclose our child's HIV status to the school after talking to specialists, after talking to doctors. A lot of people believed that we should keep it private. There was no requirement by the CDC, in any of the states, public or private schools that they needed to know. Our feeling was that no child should have to keep a secret. A secret implies shame, and my child doesn't have anything to be ashamed of. Knowing that my child was not a danger to any other child -- This was told to us by many specialists; people at Cedars, people at UCLA. They all came to our school and said, "Listen, this child is no danger to your children in any way. They have a great chance of being hit by lightning that contracting HIV from this child. I felt comfortable sending my child to school, so that people can be safe. If you don't disclose, there is a danger; when that child falls down and bleeds, there is no way of protecting that child and others if you don't disclose. I truly felt it was an important decision to make.
