If your child has been sexually abused, please know that you don’t have to go through it alone. There are people that can help you, that can help your child and that can help the abuser, if the abuser is someone within your family. It’s really important that your child got professional help. So while you are the most important person to help them in their life, don’t be ashamed to get them into counseling, so they can process their feelings. At home, what you can do to help your child is to tell them over and over again that it’s not their fault that this happened, that there’s nothing wrong with them. And to listen to them if they want to talk about it, let them tell the story as many times as they like in your safe, loving, nurturing arms or next to you, if your child is not comfortable being touched at that time. Be patient. You might have a lot of feelings yourself. And get some help with your feelings or talk to someone that you trust and care about that can help you with all the big feelings around it. The most important thing is to help your child to know that they will heal, that there is hope and that you believe that your family will be okay.
