So many American families have become what we would call "non-traditional." Think of a traditional family being a heterosexual man and a heterosexual woman and they both have the same biological connection to the offspring of that household. But for more than ten years, 40% of American babies have been born out of wedlock. That's while teenage pregnancy rates have been going down. So who's having these babies? Well, older women who have their own resources, single women, cohabiting women, gay families, bisexual families, we are seeing blended families, divorced families. What really matters to kids though is that there's a consistent attachment figure who loves them and who'd gonna be there for them. It doesn't matter how old that "parent figure" is, it doesn't matter what gender they are. What matters is the consistency and the fact that the child is seen for who they are, and neither dominated nor given way too much freedom.
