Helping your child deal with loss or a death in the family is very difficult time. Particularly, because usually it’s a grandparent, it’s an aunt or an uncle, and you as a parent are dealing with your own emotions at the same time. And often how your child’s reacting can fall under the radar for you. But it’s important that you acknowledge their feelings. You have to help them understand that grieving is a process and it’s okay to go through it. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to feel sad. It’s okay to feel confused about the future and what it may hold. And that it’s okay to talk about how they feel. And the only way they’re going to feel comfortable with that is if you’re able to share with them how you feel. So have an honest discussion with them about the person who has passed on and how you responded to it and how you plan to go forward.
