You know what? A lot of parents are often searching for is what caused my behaviorally challenging child to be challenging. And they are often fishing around for environmental explanations. You can always find something that happened environmentally in a child's life that you feel can explain why he is challenging. They are often looking for genetic explanations. You can always find somebody in the gene pool who was behaviorally challenging or had difficulties. Everybody's got an Uncle Harry in their family that they're pointing to and saying, we hope he doesn't turn out like Uncle Harry. The reality: everything's 100% nature and 100% nurture. Everything is 100% environment and 100% genetic. And I actually don't spend a lot of time trying to answer with great precision because nobody can answer this question with great precision, how did my child get to be this way? Everything's environment. Everything's genetic. Good. Now that we've settled that question, let's move on to what skills this kid is lacking and what unsolved problems are setting in motion his challenging episodes so that we can get to work.
