Research has shown that we do our best in this sort of magical, mental state the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi named flow. Flow is the state of mind that occurs when you are so into whatever it is you are doing, solving a math problem, skiing down a hill, arguing a case in court, that you forget who you are, where you are, what day it is. You become one with the task, one with the activity. And that state of flow, that is when we do our absolute best. Now the doorway to flow is play, imaginative activity. And then, when you engage in a task that you like to do and that it´s challenging, so you have to stretch. That´s when you pop into flow and it´s marvelous. When you are in that state, you are at your absolute best.
