My most challenging moment as a father was when my son was approximately 12 years old, my work took me to the middle of the country -- We live in California, and we thought we would move the family. We went out and looked at new schools. I saw that my son was a little bit sullen. I said, "Adam, what's going on here?" He said, "Dad, this school is not as good as the one that I'm leaving." He said, "I can do this, but it's just not the same." That was a moment of truth for me. I made the decision that I would commute, and i did that for seven years. That's probably the best investment I ever made because he knew how important he was to me, his sisters knew how important they were to me and their mother. Our family, their happiness, was the most important thing for us. I was willing to make this commute for seven years. I think the most important thing in raising children is to give them a sense of their value to you.

Al Checchi

Businessman and Father

Al Checchi is the author of The Change Maker, which catapults readers into a world few will ever experience. Entertaining, fast-paced, and episodic, this memoir of an unconventional agent of change provides a lesson in the values of strategic thinking and responsible leadership found so wanting today. With self-deprecating humor and irony, Al Checchi chronicles the meteoric rise whereby his creativity, strategic thinking, and negotiating skills helped transform three major American institutions-Marriott Corporation, Walt Disney, and Northwest Airlines-and led him to challenge the California political establishment as a candidate for governor. Checchi demonstrates that through experience, vision, courage, and force of personality, one person can make a difference and lead others to move beyond their comfort zones and transform our institutions.
