At some point there's a going to be a challenge that requires you to intervene. Maybe the child is caught stealing at school or they're caught cheating or there's a little bit of bullying going on. But before you call the whole group together with teachers and counselors, you want to first sit down and ask your child to describe what happened in one sentence. It's really important that your child gets the first opportunity to explain the situation. And then you ask yourself, what might have caused this behavior? Have we been too busy and we just haven't spent enough time? Is this a child who's trying to tell us we've been too controlling? Has he been hurt in some way in the family? Or does he just not have the courage he needs to not steal or follow what the rest of the group is doing? And then to ask the child, what do you want to do about this? Because a resolution is required. So give them an opportunity to solve the problem before you bring in all the heavy guns with adults who are already really good at solving problems. And when you feel like your child has come up with a solution that might be acceptable for everyone involved, then ask them to call the people that need to be called, set up a meeting, and allow them a chance to really talk about what happened, and what to do to make things right, instead of being the person that sits there with the adults saying, and you shouldn't have done this, and you should do that, and you can't do that, because at that point, no learning is happening. So you want to turn this experience over to the child so they can learn as much as they possibly can.
